Autumn Dreams: A Poem By Pete Marshall

Autumn Dreams
A Poem By Pete Marshall

The winters chill is drawing near
As wind whips through my tired bones
The furnace sparks and flares alight
The conkers placed around the home

The cobwebs hold a magic charm
As morning dew paints crystal scenes
The spiders knocked but cant get in
And lanterns glow in darkened dreams

The candy taste of trick or treat
That warms the mouth of innocence
Yet baptised souls will better fare
From witches spells and temperaments

And portals lay as weakened paths
When all who’ve gone can walk again
We pray their souls are one with God
So Man can walk once more with men

********

Autumn is my favourite season for so many reasons, and having enjoyed the plethora of poems we have received for our first competition I couldn't help but want to join in.

With Autumn comes colour, cold, fresh mornings, conkers, my wedding anniversary and Halloween. Halloween is in fact a celebration of the dead...a time to remember those that have passed..a festival that we now celebrate on 11th November and call Remembrance Day.

I hope you enjoyed my celebration of Autumn?

  1. Beautifully descriptive poem and it feels natural. I really like how throughout you bring in the All Souls aspect of the season bringing it home in the last stanza with "Man can walk once more with men." Excellent! (Lucky for me you weren't eligible for the competition.. :)

  2. I really enjoyed this poem Pete. It captured many of the feels, sights and sounds of Autumn. The second stanza was my favourite I believe; whimsically magic & perfect.
    I too wrote about the beauty of fall just a few days ago. My tribute is here;

  3. A charming word picture of "magic charms" and "cobwebs" and a nice turn from lighter fare to "baptised souls".

  16. Simply lovely, and with such an old-world charm, I think I can hear Bobbie Burns chiming in in the background!

I've brought an old favorite to the potluck: http://mairmusic.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/week-26-i-looked-into-my-heart-while-my-eyes-were/ I'm putting the link in because so far everyone has followed my main link to today's post instead of going to my contribution.
